Marthe Labes (born 1987 in Frankfurt/Oder) studied scenography at the University of Applied Science and Arts in Hannover at first and then switched to the Art University in Berlin-Weißensee for her studies in Stage and Costume Design. For two seasons she worked at Theater Bremen, where she was responsible for the design of the production „The Weight Of Water“ and the costumes of the first stage adaptation of Jaroslav Rudis novel „National Street“ in Germany (Director: Theresa Welge). For the Junge Akteure (young actors*) productions „Rich Kids“, „Lost Youth“, „Pictures Of Your True Love“ and „BOY“ in the direction of Christiane Renziehausen she took on the stage and/or costume design and the video. As her interest in participative approaches in theatre were growing, she started to educate herself in the field of cultural and art education and will finish a one year further education programme this January.
Since the beginning of 2018 she is active as a freelance artist and has initiated the theatre festival „NEW GREEK WAVE - contemporary theatre from Greece“ at Theater Bremen, of which she was also the artistic director (as part of a curatorial team of 3). The next edition NEW FEM WAVE focusses on female voices from Southeast Europe and is planned for 2020.
Based on her long relation to Greece and new contacts through the festival(s) she is develloping an idea of a research project and transnational artist network with a first focal point on the Mediterranean Sea – called FRICTION. Another project is the installation of a free centre for performance art in Chemnitz (ZDK). This will be realized within the year 2019 with her two colleagues. The main aim is to strengthen the local cultural scene and connect them with artists from different regions/nations and backgrounds. Through a residency and workshop programme an exchange network shall be established.
